Scripture
“But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus.” (Acts 20:24, NKJV)
Devotional
Paul’s farewell to the Ephesian elders is one of the most moving scenes in the book of Acts. He knows suffering awaits him. He knows imprisonment is likely. He knows this will be the last time he sees these beloved brothers. Yet his heart is steady, anchored, undistracted.
“None of these things move me.”
Not the threat of chains.
Not the uncertainty of the road ahead.
Not the sorrow of parting.
Paul had one aim: to finish the race Jesus gave him. His devotion was not divided, his priorities not blurred. His heart belonged to Christ, and nothing—not hardship, not fear, not loss—could pull him from his assignment.
He reminds the elders (and us) what matters most:
- Serve the Lord with humility.
- Be watchful over your own heart.
- Guard the flock entrusted to you.
- Cling to the Word of grace.
Every word breaths urgency—yet not panic. Sobriety—yet not despair. Paul is showing us the essence of a focused life:
A life anchored in Christ can walk through anything without being moved.
Paul did not finish well because his circumstances were easy, but because his heart was wholly the Lord’s. His devotion was not shaped by comfort, reputation, or emotion. It was shaped by one desire: “that I may finish my race with joy.”
This passage calls believers to examine what “moves” us—what distracts, detours, or derails us. Fear? Comfort? Relationships? Personal plans? The opinions of others?
Paul’s example reminds us that the only way to finish well is to follow Christ with a heart freed from distraction and anchored in devotion.
Takeaway & Reflection
The secret to finishing well is a heart fixed on Christ alone.
- Focused devotion guards against distraction and fear.
- Hardship cannot move the believer whose heart is anchored in Christ.
- God calls us to run our race with joy, courage, and faithfulness.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Give me a heart like Paul’s—steadfast, undistracted, and surrendered. Help me hold loosely to what fades and cling tightly to what lasts. Strengthen me to finish the race You have given me with joy, faithfulness, and courage, trusting Your presence every step of the way.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
