Such Were Some of You

Scripture

“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9–11, NKJV)

Devotional

These verses hold both a warning and a miracle. Paul does not soften the truth—sin separates from God. The list is sobering, describing lives marked by rebellion, self-indulgence, and unbelief. Yet right in the middle of this heavy passage shines the gospel in four words that change everything: “Such were some of you.”

The message of the cross is not that sin is acceptable, but that sinners can be transformed. The Corinthian believers once lived in these patterns, but now Paul declares what God has done: they were washed—cleansed from guilt; sanctified—set apart for holy use; and justified—declared righteous by faith in Christ. Salvation didn’t make them perfect, but it made them new.

This same grace reaches us today. The world says identity is fixed—that who we are is defined by what we’ve done or desired. But God’s Word says otherwise. In Christ, the old is gone and the new has come. The gospel doesn’t merely forgive—it redefines. It cleanses the past, reshapes the present, and secures the future.

Paul’s reminder is both hopeful and humbling: the church is not a gathering of the sinless, but of the sanctified—those rescued by grace. Our testimony is not “Look what I’ve done,” but “Look what He has done in me.” What once identified us no longer defines us.

Takeaway & Reflection

The gospel transforms identity, not just behavior.

  • Sin separates, but grace restores and redefines.
  • We are washed, sanctified, and justified in Christ.
  • Our past no longer determines our future—Jesus does.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the saving power of Your grace. Remind me daily that I am washed, sanctified, and justified in Jesus Christ. Help me to live as one who has been made new—to walk in purity, humility, and gratitude for Your mercy. May my life testify to the transformation only You can bring.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
