You Are Not Your Own

Scripture

“Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20, NKJV)

Devotional

Paul brings the Corinthians face to face with a truth that reshapes how believers view their lives: we belong to God. Salvation did not merely forgive our sins—it transferred ownership. We were bought, redeemed, and claimed at a great cost.

“You are not your own.”

These words confront the idea that faith is private or compartmentalized. Our bodies, choices, desires, and actions are not separate from our spiritual lives. Paul reminds us that the Holy Spirit does not merely visit us—He dwells within us. Our bodies have become His temple.

This truth elevates the way we live. What once was ordinary has become sacred. What once served self now belongs to God. Because of Christ’s sacrifice, our lives are no longer governed by impulse or appetite, but by reverence and gratitude.

Paul’s instruction is not meant to restrict joy, but to protect it. When we understand that we have been purchased by love, obedience becomes an act of worship rather than obligation. Holiness is not about fear—it is about honor.

The question Paul presses upon us is simple but searching:

If I belong to God, does my life reflect His ownership?

To glorify God in body and spirit means allowing His presence to shape our decisions, discipline our desires, and direct our steps. It is a daily surrender rooted in the truth that we are deeply loved and eternally claimed.

Takeaway & Reflection

Belonging to God transforms how we live.

  • We are redeemed, not self-owned.
  • God’s presence gives sacred purpose to our lives.
  • Obedience flows from gratitude, not obligation.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for purchasing me through the sacrifice of Christ. Help me live with reverence for Your presence within me. Teach me to honor You with my body, my choices, and my life—offering all that I am as an act of worship.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
