Scripture
“Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver are corroded… You have heaped up treasure in the last days.” (James 5:2–3, NKJV)
Devotional
James gives a sobering warning to those who have placed their confidence in earthly wealth.
His concern is not that people possess riches, but that riches possess them.
He paints a vivid picture:
- wealth that decays,
- clothing that moths consume,
- precious metals that corrode.
Everything people spend a lifetime accumulating is temporary.
The irony is striking. People often devote themselves to storing up treasures that cannot last, while neglecting the eternal treasures that never fade.
Jesus taught the same truth: “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth… but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” (Matthew 6:19–20, NKJV)
Money is a useful servant but a terrible master.
God entrusts resources to us, not so that we might build our own kingdoms, but so that we might participate in His. Wealth becomes a blessing when it is held with open hands and used for His glory.
James is really asking a deeper question: What are you investing your life in?
Because our greatest treasure is not measured by what sits in a bank account, but by what is stored in eternity.
Every act of generosity…
Every sacrifice for Christ…
Every life touched with the gospel…
Every investment in God’s Kingdom…
None of it is ever lost.
The things of this world eventually wear out.
The things done for Christ endure forever.
One day, none of us will wish we had accumulated more.
We will rejoice over every opportunity we took to invest in what lasts.
Takeaway & Reflection
Only eternal treasures endure forever.
- Earthly possessions are temporary.
- God calls us to steward resources for His Kingdom.
- A life invested in Christ is never wasted.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Help me hold the things of this world with open hands. Guard my heart from trusting in possessions or measuring success by what I own. Teach me to invest my time, talents, and resources in what will last for eternity. May my greatest treasure always be found in You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
