Scripture
“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13, NKJV)
Devotional
After issuing strong warnings about Israel’s failures, Paul offers reassurance. God does not warn His people without also strengthening them. Temptation is real, but so is God’s faithfulness.
Paul reminds us that temptation is not unique. We are not facing something unprecedented or irresistible. Others have walked the same road and found grace to endure. Temptation does not disqualify us, it reveals our need for dependence on God.
Most importantly, Paul anchors our hope not in human resolve, but in God’s faithfulness. He does not promise the absence of temptation, but He does promise limitation and provision. God knows our frame. He guards the boundaries of what we face and provides a way through it.
The “way of escape” is not always the removal of temptation, but the strength to endure it faithfully. Sometimes escape looks like obedience. Sometimes it looks like endurance. Sometimes it looks like turning away, reaching out, or standing firm.
This verse corrects two dangerous lies: that we are alone in temptation, and that temptation is unbeatable. Neither is true. God is present, attentive, and active in the moment of testing.
Victory is not found in self-reliance, but in trusting God’s faithfulness and responding to His provision.
Takeaway & Reflection
God is faithful in every temptation we face.
- Temptation is common, but God’s grace is sufficient.
- God limits what we face and provides a way through it.
- Dependence on God leads to endurance and victory.
