Scripture
“And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, ‘Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!’ So God granted him what he requested.” (1 Chronicles 4:10)
Devotional
Tucked quietly within a list of genealogies, the prayer of Jabez stands out like a beacon of faith. His name means “sorrow” or “pain,” yet his prayer reveals a man who believed that God could rewrite the story of his life. Rather than resigning to what had been spoken over him, Jabez called on the God of Israel—the covenant-keeping God who transforms limitation into blessing.
Jabez’s prayer is both bold and humble. He asked for God’s blessing, not out of selfish ambition, but out of a desire for a life that reflected God’s favor and purpose. To be blessed “indeed” is to ask for more of God Himself—to live under His goodness, provision, and direction.
He also prayed, “Enlarge my territory,” not merely for influence, but for greater opportunity to serve and glorify God. The one who seeks enlargement of heart before enlargement of borders will find both aligned with the will of God.
Finally, Jabez sought God’s presence and protection: “That Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil.” His request was not for ease, but for integrity—that his life would be guarded from sin and guided by grace.
When we pray like Jabez, we’re not asking for more of the world—we’re asking for more of God’s work in and through us. The Lord delights to answer prayers that flow from a surrendered heart.
Takeaway & Reflection
God honors the prayer that seeks His will above all else.
- True blessing is found in God’s presence, not possessions.
- Enlargement begins within—a heart willing to be used by God.
- Protection from evil preserves our witness and joy.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the example of Jabez, who believed You could turn sorrow into blessing. Enlarge my heart to love You more and to serve others faithfully. Let Your hand be upon me for guidance, Your power for strength, and Your grace for protection. May my life bring glory to Your name and not cause pain.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
