The Power of the Cross

Scripture

“I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, lest anyone should say that I had baptized in my own name. Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas. Besides, I do not know whether I baptized any other. For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:14–18, NKJV)

Devotional

In a culture that prized eloquence and intellect, Paul refused to rely on human wisdom to proclaim the gospel. He knew that no clever argument could save a soul—only the cross could. The Corinthians had been divided by personalities and pride, but Paul redirected their gaze to the single truth that unites all believers: the power of the cross.

The cross of Christ is the great equalizer. It silences human boasting and exposes our deepest need. To the world, it looks like weakness—a Savior crucified in shame. But to those who believe, it is the very power of God, the instrument of salvation, and the revelation of divine love.

Paul’s simplicity was intentional. He didn’t want the gospel to be overshadowed by style or rhetoric. The message itself carried transforming power—power to forgive sin, break bondage, and reconcile hearts to God. When we proclaim the cross, we are declaring that our hope is not in human strength, but in a Savior who conquered through suffering.

Every believer is a testimony of that power. The same cross that saved us continues to shape us—calling us to humility, obedience, and faith. What the world calls foolish, we call victory.

Takeaway & Reflection

The cross reveals the wisdom and power of God.

  • Human wisdom fades, but the message of the cross endures.
  • The gospel is powerful because of what Christ accomplished, not how we present it.
  • True strength is found in surrender to the One who gave His life for us.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the power of the cross that saves, redeems, and transforms. Help me to never lose sight of its meaning or its majesty. May my life reflect its humility and its hope, and may I always boast in nothing but the cross of Jesus Christ.

In His name, Amen.
