Scripture
“Thus says the LORD: ’Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; then you will find rest for your souls. But they said, “We will not walk in it.”’” (Jeremiah 6:16)
Devotional
The Lord’s call through Jeremiah was simple, yet urgent: “Stand… see… ask… and walk.” In a nation rushing toward judgment, God invited His people to pause, to look back, and to seek the “old paths”—the ways of truth, obedience, and wholehearted devotion to Him. These were not outdated customs, but timeless foundations: faith, humility, repentance, and trust in God’s Word.
The “old paths” were never about nostalgia—they were about alignment. They represented a return to what God had established from the beginning: a life ordered by His truth and lived in fellowship with Him. In these ancient ways, the Lord promised rest for the soul—a rest that comes only when the heart walks in harmony with His will.
But the tragedy of Jeremiah’s day is echoed in our own: “We will not walk in it.” The people preferred new ways, easier ways—paths of self-determination rather than submission. It’s a warning as much as an invitation: rest is found not in reinventing God’s way, but in returning to it.
In an age that prizes innovation and self-expression, God’s call remains the same: stand still, look around, ask for the ancient paths, and walk in them. The way of holiness, faithfulness, and obedience is still the “good way.” And when we walk in it, we discover what every restless heart longs for—true rest for the soul.
Takeaway & Reflection
The “old paths” are not behind us—they are before us, waiting to be walked anew by hearts anchored in God’s truth.
- God’s ways are ancient because they are eternal.
- Rest for the soul comes through obedience, not reinvention.
- Standing still before the Lord helps us discern the right path in a restless world.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for calling me back to the old paths—the good and ancient ways that lead to life and peace. Guard me from the temptation to follow the world’s shifting ways, and help me to stand, see, ask, and walk in Your truth. May my steps be guided by Your Word, and may I find rest for my soul in the path of obedience.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
