The Cost of Following Christ

Scripture

“So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.” (Luke 14:33)

Devotional

Jesus never hid the cost of discipleship. Following Him requires more than admiration—it requires surrender. In this verse, He speaks plainly: to be His disciple is to lay down everything that competes with His lordship. The word “forsake” means to renounce ownership—to let go of control, possessions, plans, and pride, placing all in His hands.

Christ calls us not to comfort, but to commitment. The kingdom of God is not built on half-hearted allegiance or divided affections. True discipleship means Jesus is not one of many priorities—He is the priority. It is a call to hold loosely the things of earth so that we may hold tightly to Him.

Forsaking all doesn’t always mean giving everything away, but it does mean giving Christ full authority over everything we have. It is not loss—it is liberation. The disciple who surrenders all to Jesus finds a joy the world cannot offer and a freedom the world cannot understand.

The cost is high, but the reward is higher. To follow Christ fully is to discover that what we give up is nothing compared to what we gain: the presence, peace, and purpose of walking with the Savior.

Takeaway & Reflection

True discipleship is not about what we keep, but what we surrender.

  • Following Jesus requires open hands and an undivided heart.
  • Surrender is not a single act, but a daily posture.
  • What we give up for Christ is nothing compared to what we gain in Him.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Teach me to follow You with a surrendered heart. Help me to forsake anything that hinders my devotion to Jesus. May I hold all things loosely, trusting that what You ask me to release You replace with something eternal. Let my life reflect the joy and freedom of wholehearted discipleship.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
