Sustained by the Word

Scripture

“Unless Your law had been my delight, I would then have perished in my affliction. I will never forget Your precepts, for by them You have given me life.” (Psalm 119:92–93, NKJV)

Devotional

The psalmist speaks from the depths of affliction, not from a place of ease. He testifies that without God’s Word, he would have been overwhelmed, not merely discouraged, but undone. What preserved him was not relief from suffering, but delight in God’s law.

God’s Word did not remove the affliction, but it sustained him through it. In the midst of pressure, grief, or hardship, Scripture became life itself. The psalmist clung to God’s precepts because they reminded him who God is, what He has promised, and where true hope is found.

Affliction has a way of stripping away lesser comforts. In those moments, what remains reveals what truly sustains us. For the psalmist, God’s Word was not a last resort, it was a lifeline. It breathed strength into weary faith and anchored his heart when circumstances threatened to overwhelm him.

This passage reminds us that Scripture is not merely to be studied, but delighted in. When God’s Word becomes our delight, it steadies us in suffering and revives us when we feel near collapse. The same Word that spoke creation into existence speaks life into the afflicted soul.

God’s precepts give life, not only eternal life, but sustaining life in the present moment. They remind us that affliction is not the final word, and that God’s truth remains faithful even when our strength falters.

Takeaway & Reflection

God’s Word sustains the soul in times of affliction.

  • Delight in Scripture anchors the heart during hardship.
  • God’s Word gives life when strength is nearly gone.
  • Remembering His truth preserves us through suffering.
