Scripture
“Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase… For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building.” (1 Corinthians 3:5–9, NKJV)
Devotional
The Corinthians had elevated their favorite leaders into spiritual celebrities. Some rallied around Paul, others around Apollos, and still others around Peter. But Paul refuses to accept the pedestal they tried to place him on. Instead, he reduces himself — and every other minister — to one simple identity: servant.
- Paul planted.
- Apollos watered.
- But God gave the increase.
This is the heartbeat of true ministry. The focus is never on the planter or the waterer, but on the God who brings life. Paul’s words dismantle pride, competition, and comparison. No Christian leader is the source of spiritual growth, they are instruments in the hands of a faithful God.
Paul goes further: “We are God’s fellow workers.”
Not competitors, not performers, not spiritual celebrities, but servants working under one Master toward one purpose.
And then comes a tender truth: “You are God’s field… you are God’s building.”
The people of God are not trophies for leaders; they are the precious possession of God Himself. Ministry is not about gathering followers, but nurturing hearts that belong to Him.
This passage reshapes how we view service, leadership, and community. Whether you teach, mentor, encourage, pray, or quietly sow seeds unseen, your role matters — not because of who you are, but because of who He is.
Takeaway & Reflection
All fruitfulness comes from God, not human effort.
- We plant and water, but God gives the growth.
- Christian leaders are servants, not celebrities.
- God delights to use ordinary people to accomplish eternal work.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for giving each of us a part in Your work. Keep me humble, faithful, and surrendered as I plant and water where You’ve placed me. Remind me that only You bring the increase. Use my life for Your glory and make me a servant who builds Your kingdom, not my own.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
