Servants and Stewards

Scripture

“Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful. But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by a human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. For I know of nothing against myself, yet I am not justified by this; but He who judges me is the Lord. Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one’s praise will come from God.” (1 Corinthians 4:1–5)

Devotional

Paul reminds the church at Corinth—and every believer—that ministry is not a stage for recognition, but a trust for stewardship. He describes himself and others not as leaders seeking honor, but as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. The measure of a servant is not success, but faithfulness.

Faithfulness is what God values most in His servants. Titles, results, and opinions will fade, but the quiet obedience of one who serves for God’s glory endures forever. Paul’s humility is striking—he refused to live for human approval, reminding us that ultimate accountability belongs to the Lord alone.

In a world quick to judge, Paul points our focus forward—to the day when Christ will reveal every motive and intention. The reward of the faithful servant is not applause, but the smile of the Master who says, “Well done.” Until that day, we serve unseen, trust unshaken, and steward faithfully what He’s placed in our hands.

We may not all hold positions of ministry, but every believer is a steward of the gospel, entrusted with time, truth, and testimony. God asks not for perfection, but for faithfulness—a heart that serves Him in humility and sincerity.

Takeaway & Reflection

The call of every believer is to be a faithful steward of what God has entrusted.

  • Faithfulness matters more than fame.
  • Human judgment is temporary; God’s judgment is perfect.
  • Servants live for the Master’s approval, not the crowd’s applause.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for entrusting me with the privilege of serving You. Teach me to be faithful in what You’ve given—whether seen or unseen. Guard my heart from comparison and pride, and help me to live each day for Your approval alone. May my life be a reflection of humble stewardship and steadfast devotion.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
