Scripture
“Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.” (1 Corinthians 3:12–15, NKJV)
Devotional
Paul’s imagery of building continues, but here the focus shifts to accountability. Every believer builds upon the foundation of Christ, but not every structure endures. One day, all our works—our motives, our ministries, our decisions—will be tested by fire. The question is not whether we have built, but how we have built.
The fire of God’s judgment is not meant to destroy us but to reveal what truly matters. Gold, silver, and precious stones represent faithful, Spirit-led labor—things done for God’s glory. Wood, hay, and straw symbolize works rooted in pride, selfish ambition, or fleeting reward. When the testing comes, only what was done in Christ’s strength and for His glory will stand.
This truth isn’t meant to discourage but to purify. It reminds us that eternity gives weight to every moment and meaning to every choice. God sees the unseen sacrifices, the quiet prayers, and the faithful perseverance. Nothing done for Him is ever wasted.
The believer whose work endures will receive reward—not as payment, but as joy in seeing Christ glorified. Even for those whose efforts do not last, salvation remains secure; yet their loss reveals the tragedy of misplaced devotion. The call is simple but profound: build for what lasts.
Takeaway & Reflection
God’s testing reveals the true value of our work.
- Faithful service endures because it’s rooted in Christ.
- Temporary motives cannot withstand eternal fire.
- Live today with eternity in view—build for what lasts.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Search my heart and refine my motives. Teach me to labor with pure devotion, to seek Your glory above my own, and to build my life with what endures. May every work of my hands reflect the faith and love of Christ, so that when tested, it brings You honor.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
