Scripture
“And Jesus answered and said to her, ’Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.’” (Luke 10:41–42)
Devotional
Martha’s house was full of good activity, but her heart was heavy with distraction. She loved Jesus and wanted to serve Him well, yet the weight of responsibility and the pressure to do everything right left her anxious and frustrated. In contrast, Mary sat quietly at His feet, listening—not striving, not performing, just resting in His presence.
Jesus’ gentle correction to Martha was not a rebuke of service but a realignment of priorities: “One thing is needful.” In all the noise and necessity of life, only one thing truly matters—being with Him.
Every generation faces this same tension. We serve, plan, and labor for good things, yet risk losing sight of the best thing: intimacy with Christ. He doesn’t call us to abandon our responsibilities but to reorder our hearts around His presence. When we choose Him first, everything else finds its proper place.
Busyness may fill our hands, but only Jesus can fill our hearts. Time spent at His feet is never wasted—it is the one thing that cannot be taken away.
Takeaway & Reflection
The “one thing needful” is not found in doing more for Christ but in being with Christ.
His presence brings peace where anxiety once ruled.
His Word gives clarity where confusion once lingered.
His love renews the weary heart and restores what striving cannot.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Help me to slow down and choose the one thing that truly matters—time with You. Guard my heart from distraction and remind me that nothing compares to sitting at the feet of Jesus. May my service flow from communion, not compulsion, and may I find rest in Your presence each day.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
