Scripture
“Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil… bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” (1 Corinthians 13:4–7, NKJV)
Devotional
Paul moves from defining the necessity of love to describing its character. These verses are not abstract ideals; they are a portrait of Christ Himself.
- Love is patient when tested.
- Kind when it would be easier to withdraw.
- Free from envy when others succeed.
- Humble when it could demand recognition.
This kind of love is not natural, it is formed by the Spirit. Left to ourselves, we are easily irritated, self-protective, and quick to take offense. But the love Paul describes is steady, selfless, and enduring.
Notice what love is not:
- It does not insist on its own way
- It is not easily provoked
- It does not keep a record of wrongs
And notice what love does:
- It bears – carrying what is heavy
- It believes – giving the benefit of the doubt
- It hopes – refusing to give up
- It endures – remaining when it would be easier to leave
This is not weak love. It is strong, anchored, and resilient. It reflects the way Christ loves us , patiently, faithfully, and without quitting.
This passage invites us to move beyond defining love by feeling and into defining it by action and character. Love is not measured by intensity, but by consistency.
When we read these verses, the question naturally becomes personal: Is this the love others experience from me?
We will not reflect this perfectly, but as we abide in Christ, this is the love He forms within us.
Takeaway & Reflection
Christlike love is patient, humble, and enduring.
- Love is revealed in how we respond, not just what we feel.
- True love reflects the character of Christ.
- The Spirit forms this kind of love in surrendered hearts.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Teach me to love as You love. Where I am impatient, make me gentle. Where I am self-focused, make me selfless. Shape my heart to reflect the character of Christ so that others experience Your love through me.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
