Love Never Fails

Scripture

“Love never fails… And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:8, 13, NKJV)

Devotional

Paul lifts our eyes from the present moment to eternity. Spiritual gifts, as valuable as they are, are temporary. Prophecies will cease. Tongues will be stilled. Knowledge, as we know it now, will pass away.

But one thing remains: Love never fails.

The word “fails” here carries the idea of falling away or coming to an end. Everything we rely on in this life has limits, abilities, understanding, even spiritual expressions. But love does not fade, expire, or become unnecessary. It continues because it reflects the very nature of God.

Right now, we see partially. We understand incompletely. Our perspective is limited. But a day is coming when we will see clearly, know fully, and stand in the presence of Christ. In that moment, many things we depended on will no longer be needed.

But love will remain, because it belongs to eternity.

Paul concludes with three abiding realities: faith, hope, and love. Faith trusts God. Hope looks forward to what He has promised. But love surpasses them both, because love will continue even when faith becomes sight and hope is fulfilled.

  • This reshapes how we live now.
  • If love is what lasts forever, then love must be what matters most today.
  • If love is eternal, then love should guide every temporary thing.

In a world that prizes knowledge, ability, and visibility, God calls us back to what never fails. Not performance. Not recognition. Not even gifting. Love.

The love we cultivate now is not wasted; it carries into eternity.

Takeaway & Reflection

Love is the only thing that will never pass away.

  • Spiritual gifts are temporary; love is eternal.
  • What lasts forever should shape how we live today.
  • Love reflects the nature and heart of God.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Teach me to value what You value. Help me not to chase what fades, but to pursue what lasts. Fill my heart with Your love, and let it shape my words, my actions, and my relationships. May my life reflect what will endure forever.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
