Scripture
“Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted… Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.” (1 Corinthians 10:6, 11, NKJV)
Devotional
Paul looks back to Israel’s history and urges the Corinthians to pay close attention. Though Israel experienced incredible privileges — deliverance from Egypt, guidance by God’s presence, provision in the wilderness — many still fell because their hearts turned away from trust and obedience.
The warning is clear: spiritual experiences do not guarantee spiritual faithfulness.
Israel’s failures were not recorded to shame them, but to instruct us. Paul says these events were written for our admonition, especially for those living at the close of the age. The past becomes a mirror, revealing how easily hearts can drift even after encountering God’s power.
Paul highlights familiar dangers:
- Desire unchecked
- Idolatry tolerated
- Sexual immorality excused
- Grumbling normalized
- Testing God instead of trusting Him
Each began in the heart before showing up in behavior. The problem was not God’s faithfulness — it was the people’s forgetfulness.
This passage challenges a false sense of security. Confidence in past obedience or spiritual experiences cannot replace present faithfulness. Paul warns that standing requires humility, vigilance, and dependence on God.
Yet the warning is not meant to lead to fear, but to wisdom. God faithfully preserved these accounts so we would learn, guard our hearts, and walk carefully. He desires not our downfall, but our endurance.
History becomes a gift when we are willing to learn from it.
Takeaway & Reflection
God’s past warnings are meant to guard our present walk.
- Spiritual privilege does not replace obedience.
- The heart must be guarded before actions follow.
- Learning from Scripture protects us from repeating mistakes.
