Lawful, But Not Helpful

Scripture

“All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify.” (1 Corinthians 10:23, NKJV)

Devotional

Paul addresses a mindset that quietly creeps into the Christian life: “I’m allowed to do this.” He doesn’t deny that believers live under grace, not law. In Christ, we are free. But Paul immediately adds a necessary qualifier — freedom is not the same as wisdom.

  • Just because something is permissible does not mean it is beneficial.
  • Just because something is allowed does not mean it builds us up.

Christian maturity is not measured by how much we are free to do, but by how carefully we choose what truly edifies. Paul shifts the question from “Can I?” to “Should I?” From personal rights to spiritual impact.

Freedom in Christ was never meant to be self-serving. It was meant to be love-governed and others-aware. Choices that feed the flesh, dull spiritual sensitivity, or influence others toward compromise may be lawful — but they are not helpful. They weaken discernment and erode spiritual strength over time.

Paul’s concern is not restriction but edification. The believer’s aim is not to push boundaries, but to build lives — our own and others’. True freedom willingly lays aside personal rights for the sake of growth, clarity, and love.

This verse invites us to examine our decisions honestly:

  • Does this draw me closer to Christ?
  • Does this strengthen my spiritual life?
  • Does this help or hinder someone else’s walk with the Lord?

The goal of the Christian life is not to see how close we can get to the edge, but how deeply we can grow in Christ.

Takeaway & Reflection

Spiritual maturity chooses what builds over what is merely allowed.

  • Freedom must be guided by wisdom and love.
  • Not everything lawful is spiritually beneficial.
  • Edification is a higher aim than personal liberty.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the freedom I have in Christ. Teach me to use that freedom wisely. Help me choose what builds my faith, strengthens others, and honors You. Guard my heart from self-centered choices, and lead me in paths that edify and reflect Your love.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
