Scripture
“Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.’” (James 4:15, NKJV)
Devotional
James turns from pride in the heart to pride in our plans.
He describes people confidently mapping out the future, where they will go, how long they will stay, what they will accomplish, and what they will gain. The problem is not planning. Scripture commends wisdom, diligence, and preparation.
The problem is presumption.
James reminds us how little control we actually have: “For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.”
That truth is not meant to make us fearful. It is meant to make us humble.
“If the Lord wills” is more than a phrase, it is a posture of surrender.
It means we make plans with open hands.
We work diligently without pretending we control outcomes.
We dream, prepare, and move forward while remembering that every breath, opportunity, and tomorrow belongs to God.
This kind of surrender brings freedom. We do not have to force every door open or panic when plans change. If the Lord redirects us, we can trust His wisdom. If He delays us, we can trust His timing. If He allows something different than we expected, we can trust His purpose.
James also makes the passage deeply practical: knowing what is right and refusing to do it is itself sin. So, dependence on God’s will is not passive. We seek His direction, and then we obey what He makes clear.
Plan wisely.
Work faithfully.
But hold tomorrow loosely.
The safest future is the one surrendered to the Lord.
Takeaway & Reflection
Wise planning remains submitted to God’s will.
- Planning is good; presumption is not.
- Our lives and opportunities belong to God.
- Surrender allows us to trust Him when plans change.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Teach me to make plans with humility and open hands. Guard me from assuming control over a future that belongs to You. Help me seek Your will, obey what You show me, and trust You when Your plans differ from mine. May every tomorrow be surrendered to You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
