Scripture
“But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: ‘God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’ … Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” (James 4:6, 10, NKJV)
Devotional
James has just exposed the divided heart: worldly desires, envy, conflict, and spiritual unfaithfulness. The diagnosis is serious.
Then comes one of the most hopeful phrases in the chapter: “But He gives more grace.”
More grace than our failure.
More grace than our wandering.
More grace than our pride.
More grace than the mess we have made.
God’s answer to sin is not indifference, but neither is it hopelessness. He calls us to humility because humility is the doorway through which grace is received.
Pride resists God because pride says, I can manage this myself. Humility says, Lord, I need You.
That is why James commands us to submit to God, cleanse our hands, purify our hearts, mourn over sin, and humble ourselves before Him. These are not steps to earn grace. They are the posture of a heart finally willing to receive it.
Grace flows freely to the humble heart.
Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is seeing yourself truthfully before God. It is admitting sin without excuse, weakness without shame, and dependence without resistance.
And then comes the promise: “He will lift you up.”
We do not have to exalt ourselves.
We do not have to defend ourselves.
We do not have to pretend we are stronger than we are.
When we bow low before the Lord, He knows exactly how and when to raise us.
The safest place for the believer is not self-confidence but surrendered dependence.
Because wherever humility is found, grace is already near.
Takeaway & Reflection
God gives abundant grace to the humble.
- Pride resists dependence; humility receives grace.
- Repentance is not humiliation, but restoration.
- God lifts up those who willingly bow before Him.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You that You give more grace. Search my heart and expose any pride that keeps me from depending fully on You. Teach me to humble myself before You, receive Your correction, and rest in Your mercy. Lift me in Your time and in Your way and let my life reflect the grace You so freely give.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
