Going Forward: The Blessing of Obedience

Scripture

“But this is what I commanded them, saying, ‘Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be My people. And walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you.’ Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but followed the counsels and the dictates of their evil hearts, and went backward and not forward.” (Jeremiah 7:23–24)

Devotional

The message God gave through Jeremiah was both simple and profound: “Obey My voice, and it will be well with you.” Obedience has always been the measure of love and the pathway to blessing. God’s desire was never to burden His people with endless rules, but to lead them into a relationship built on trust, dependence, and wholehearted devotion.

Obedience is not about perfection—it’s about direction. God’s command to “walk in all the ways that I have commanded you” was an invitation to move forward with Him, step by step, in faith. But the people refused to listen. Instead, they followed their own counsels—the pull of self-will and the dictates of their own hearts—and Scripture says they “went backward and not forward.”

That same warning reaches us today. Every time we choose self over surrender, comfort over conviction, we move backward in the things of God. The path of obedience may be narrow, but it always leads to life. The path of self-will is wide, but it leads to emptiness and decline.

The Lord still calls His people to listen—to incline their ear, to trust His voice, and to walk forward in the light of His Word. Obedience is not just God’s requirement; it is His gift. For in walking with Him, we find what the world can never offer: peace, purpose, and true progress of the soul.

Takeaway & Reflection

True obedience is not about rules, but relationship—a life that moves forward with God, not backward in self.

  • When we obey, we walk in step with His Spirit.
  • When we listen, He leads us toward peace and purpose.
  • The voice we follow determines the direction of our lives.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Teach me to incline my ear to Your voice and to walk in all the ways You command. Forgive me for the times I’ve followed my own counsel instead of Yours. Help me to move forward in faith, trusting that obedience to You leads to blessing and peace. May my heart always be tender to Your leading.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
