Scripture
“For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence. But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption—that, as it is written, ‘He who glories, let him glory in the Lord.’” (1 Corinthians 1:26–31, NKJV)
Devotional
Paul turns the mirror toward the Corinthian believers, reminding them that their very existence as the church is proof of God’s upside-down wisdom. The world celebrates power, status, and intellect—but God delights in working through what the world overlooks. He chooses the weak to confound the strong, the humble to silence the proud, and the ordinary to display His extraordinary grace.
The purpose is unmistakable: “that no flesh should glory in His presence.” God’s calling ensures that all glory belongs to Him alone. Our salvation, our wisdom, our righteousness, our sanctification—all of it flows from Christ. We contribute nothing to our redemption but our need for it.
This truth is freeing. It reminds us that God’s choice is not based on worthiness, talent, or reputation. He chooses according to His grace, not our credentials. The same God who called fishermen, tax collectors, and tentmakers continues to use those the world might disregard—to magnify His power and reveal His wisdom.
In Christ, we have all we need. He is our righteousness when we fall short, our sanctification when we struggle, our redemption when we cannot save ourselves. The more we recognize our weakness, the more His glory shines through our lives.
Takeaway & Reflection
God’s wisdom is revealed through His gracious choice.
- He chooses the weak to display His strength.
- He works through humility to reveal His glory.
- Our only boast is in the Lord who redeems and transforms.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for choosing what the world overlooks and for using weakness to reveal Your strength. Help me to walk in humility, remembering that every good thing I have is from You. May my life point others to Your wisdom and glory, and may I boast only in Christ.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
