God Who Gives the Increase

Scripture

“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase.” (1 Corinthians 3:6–7)

Devotional

In Corinth, believers were dividing themselves by loyalty to different leaders—some to Paul, others to Apollos. But Paul reminded them that ministry is not about personalities or recognition; it is about partnership in God’s work. Planting and watering are essential, but neither the planter nor the waterer holds the power to make anything grow. Only God gives the increase.

This truth humbles us and frees us. It humbles us because it reminds us that all fruit comes from the hand of God, not our skill, strength, or strategy. It frees us because it releases us from the burden of trying to produce results that only He can bring. Our part is obedience—faithfully planting seeds of truth and watering them with prayer and love. The harvest belongs entirely to Him.

Every act of faithfulness—every word spoken, every prayer offered, every unseen service—is part of a larger work God is doing. We may never see the full growth of what we’ve sown, but He does. The same God who begins the work is faithful to bring it to completion, and every seed sown in His name will bear fruit in His time.

Takeaway & Reflection

God alone gives the increase; our call is to be faithful in what He’s given us to do.

  • Ministry is partnership, not competition.
  • Growth is God’s work; obedience is ours.
  • Every seed planted in faith contributes to His eternal harvest.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the privilege of serving in Your field. Teach me to labor with humility, trusting You for the results. Guard my heart from striving for recognition or control, and help me to rejoice in Your work, whether I plant, water, or simply watch You bring increase. May all growth and glory be Yours alone.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
