God Is Our Refuge and Strength

Scripture

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1, NKJV)

Devotional

The psalmist begins not with fear, but with faith. Before describing the chaos that surrounds—the trembling earth and roaring waters—he declares who God is: our refuge and strength. In every season of uncertainty, this truth anchors the soul. God is not distant from trouble; He is present in it.

Our refuge is not a place—it’s a Person. When the foundations around us shake, the believer’s safety is found in the steadfast presence of God. He is both shelter and strength, protection and power. The same God who invites us to hide under His wings also enables us to stand when life feels unsteady.

“Very present” means near, immediate, available. God doesn’t watch from afar or delay His care until we’ve composed ourselves; He meets us in the middle of our need. The storms of life may not cease immediately, but His peace becomes the calm within them.

This verse calls us to run—not to fear, not to self-reliance, but to Him. When everything else gives way, He remains unshaken. The believer who rests in this truth can say with confidence: God is here, and that is enough.

Takeaway & Reflection

God is our refuge in trouble and our strength through it.

  • He is our safe place when everything feels uncertain.
  • His strength sustains what ours cannot.
  • His presence is our peace in the midst of the storm.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being my refuge and strength. When I feel overwhelmed, remind me that You are near—my constant help in every trial. Anchor my heart in Your presence, and teach me to rest in Your unshakable peace.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
