Scripture
“Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be loosed. Are you loosed from a wife? Do not seek a wife. But even if you do marry, you have not sinned…” (1 Corinthians 7:27–28, NKJV)
Devotional
Paul writes to believers who were restless in their circumstances and uncertain about how their relationship status affected their spiritual lives. Some married believers wondered if they’d be more devoted to Christ if they were single. Some unmarried believers felt pressured to marry quickly. Paul’s counsel is simple, steady, and freeing: Stay faithful where you are.
- Marriage is honorable.
- Singleness is honorable.
- Neither status is more spiritual or more holy than the other.
What matters most is not whether a believer marries or remains single, but whether they walk with Christ in the season God has given them. Paul echoes a central theme of the chapter: You don’t need to change your situation to be fruitful — you need to trust God in it.
- The married are to be faithful and devoted.
- The unmarried are to be content and focused.
- Those seeking marriage may pursue it honorably.
- Those remaining unmarried may do so fruitfully.
Paul’s words free us from comparison, pressure, and false guilt. God knows the season we’re in, and He intends to work through it — not apart from it. Whether married or unmarried, we are called to walk with Christ, honor Him with our choices, and trust Him with our future.
Takeaway & Reflection
Your relationship status does not determine your spiritual usefulness — your faithfulness does.
- God can use you fully right where you are today.
- Marriage is honorable; singleness is honorable.
- Peace comes from trusting God’s placement and timing.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Help me trust You in the season I am in. Remove restlessness from my heart and teach me to walk faithfully, whether married or single. Shape my desires according to Your will, guard me from comparison, and help me honor Christ in every relationship and circumstance.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
