Scripture
“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:7–8 , NKJV)
Devotional
James 4 begins by exposing something uncomfortable: many of the conflicts around us begin with desires within us. We want, envy, strive, and become frustrated when life does not bend according to our wishes. James traces outward conflict back to an inward battle for the heart.
Then, right in the middle of his correction, comes one of Scripture’s sweetest invitations:
“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”
God does not merely expose our wandering; He invites us home.
Notice the order James gives us. First, submit to God. Before resisting the devil, before cleaning up outward behavior, the heart must come back under God’s authority. Submission says, Your will above mine. Your wisdom above mine. Your ways above mine.
Then comes resistance: “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” We sometimes spend enormous energy trying to defeat temptation while neglecting the first command, submission. But spiritual resistance grows strong from a heart already surrendered to God.
And then: draw near.
Prayer. Scripture. Worship. Confession. Quiet dependence. These are not religious performances designed to persuade God to come closer. They are ways we turn our attention and affection toward the God who already desires fellowship with us.
James makes an extraordinary promise: He will draw near to you.
The Lord is not reluctant. He is not standing at a distance waiting for us to become worthy. When His children turn toward Him sincerely, they find Him ready to receive, cleanse, restore, and strengthen.
The answer to a divided heart is not greater striving.
It is greater nearness.
When temptation grows strong, draw near.
When your heart becomes restless, draw near.
When the world becomes loud, draw near.
When you have wandered, draw near.
There is no safer place for the heart than close to God.
Takeaway & Reflection
A surrendered heart finds strength in the nearness of God.
- Submission to God comes before resistance to the enemy.
- Drawing near requires turning away from divided loyalties.
- God welcomes those who sincerely seek Him.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Draw my heart away from anything competing with my devotion to You. Teach me to submit fully to Your will, resist what draws me toward sin, and seek Your presence above everything else. Thank You for the promise that when I draw near to You, You draw near to me. Keep my heart close to Yours.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
