Do Not Go Beyond What Is Written

Scripture

“Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of one against the other.” (1 Corinthians 4:6, NKJV)

Devotional

Paul identifies the root beneath the Corinthians’ divisions: they had begun to think beyond what is written. Instead of allowing Scripture to set the boundaries for belief, behavior, and judgment, they were forming opinions shaped by pride, preference, and human wisdom.

When believers move beyond God’s Word, comparison and pride quickly follow. Some exalt one leader over another. Some elevate personal insight over biblical truth. Others assume authority to judge motives and measure worth—roles that belong to God alone.

Paul’s warning is both protective and pastoral. God’s Word is not restrictive; it is anchoring. It guards us from pride, preserves unity, and keeps our hearts humble. Scripture sets the lines within which true freedom flourishes.

To “not think beyond what is written” means:

  • Allowing Scripture to define truth, not emotion or culture
  • Submitting our opinions to God’s revealed Word
  • Refusing to elevate personal preference above biblical principle

The moment we step beyond Scripture, we step into dangerous territory. Pride grows. Division deepens. Grace diminishes. But when we stay rooted in what God has spoken, humility is restored and unity strengthened.

This verse gently calls us back to the simplicity of trust and obedience. God has spoken clearly. We do not need to improve upon His Word, reinterpret it to suit ourselves, or go beyond it to appear wise. Our calling is to receive it, walk in it, and remain under its authority.

Takeaway & Reflection

God’s Word is the boundary that protects humility and unity.

  • Pride grows when Scripture is sidelined.
  • Unity flourishes when God’s Word sets the standard.
  • Spiritual maturity stays anchored in what God has written.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Keep my heart humble and anchored in Your Word. Guard me from prideful thinking and from stepping beyond what You have spoken. Teach me to submit my thoughts, opinions, and judgments to the authority of Scripture. Let Your Word shape my heart, guide my steps, and preserve unity among Your people.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
