Do Not Forfeit Your Inheritance

Scripture

”…the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.” (Acts 20:32, NKJV)

Devotional

Scripture tells us plainly that believers have an inheritance — one secured not by effort, but by grace. It is eternal, incorruptible, and promised by God Himself. Yet the Bible also warns us, again and again, that this inheritance can be neglected, exchanged, or forfeited in the sense of reward and fullness, when our hearts turn toward the world instead of toward Christ.

Esau traded his birthright for a single meal.

Israel exchanged God’s promises for fleeting pleasures.

Demas forsook Paul, “having loved this present world.”

None of these people lost God’s existence — but they lost something precious by choosing the immediate over the eternal.

Paul’s words in Acts 20 remind us that the inheritance belongs to those who are built up by the Word of grace. Growth, endurance, holiness, and perseverance all shape how we walk into what God has prepared for us. The inheritance is real — but it is meant to be treasured, not treated casually.

The danger is subtle. We rarely say, “I choose the world over Christ.” Instead, we drift. We become preoccupied. We allow comfort, success, approval, or possessions to slowly replace devotion. And over time, the eternal begins to feel distant, while the temporary feels urgent.

What we pursue reveals what we value.

If our hearts chase what fades, we will miss what lasts.

If we trade devotion for distraction, we weaken our eternal reward.

Scripture never presents the Christian life as a competition for salvation — but it does present it as a race worth running well. God desires His children to lay hold of all He has promised, not to arrive empty-handed because they settled for lesser things.

Your inheritance is not fragile — but your focus can be.

Your salvation is secure — but your reward is shaped by devotion.

Eternity is certain — but how we enter it matters.

Do not trade what is eternal for what is temporary.

Do not forfeit what God has promised for what the world offers.

Lift your eyes, guard your heart, and walk worthy of the inheritance you have received.

Takeaway & Reflection

An eternal inheritance is worth guarding with an undivided heart.

  • God has promised His people a lasting inheritance.
  • Worldly pursuits can dull our hunger for eternal things.
  • What we value today shapes what we receive tomorrow.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the inheritance You have prepared for me through Christ. Guard my heart from chasing what fades and help me treasure what is eternal. Strengthen my devotion, steady my focus, and teach me to live with eternity always in view. I do not want to forfeit what You have promised by settling for lesser things.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
