Scripture
“So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: ‘Death is swallowed up in victory.’” (1 Corinthians 15:54, NKJV)
Devotional
Death is humanity’s great enemy. No amount of wealth, strength, wisdom, or achievement can escape it. Every grave reminds us that this world is broken by sin.
But Paul declares that because of Jesus Christ, death will not win.
One day, what is corruptible will put on incorruption. What is mortal will become immortal. The bodies weakened by age, sickness, sorrow, and decay will be transformed by the power of God.
And then this triumphant declaration will ring out: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”
Notice the image Paul uses. Death is not merely delayed or weakened, it is swallowed up. Overcome completely. Consumed by the victory of Christ.
Through the resurrection, Jesus did what no one else could do. He entered death and emerged victorious. The grave that once held fear now holds no final authority over the believer.
This does not mean grief disappears. Even faithful believers mourn loss. Jesus Himself wept at Lazarus’ tomb. But the resurrection changes the nature of grief. Christians grieve with hope because death is no longer permanent separation for those in Christ.
Paul goes on to ask: “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?”
The sting of death was sin, and Christ has removed it through the cross.
Because Jesus lives:
- death is defeated
- eternity is secured
- fear loses its mastery
The resurrection is not only future comfort, it is present courage. Believers can live boldly because the worst thing death could do has already been overcome by Christ.
Victory is not found in avoiding death.
Victory is found in belonging to the risen Savior.
Takeaway & Reflection
Christ’s resurrection has defeated death forever.
- Death no longer has final victory over believers.
- The resurrection transforms grief with hope.
- Eternal victory belongs to those who are in Christ.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the victory secured through Jesus Christ. When fear or grief rises, remind me that death has been conquered through the resurrection. Help me live with courage, hope, and confidence in the eternal life You have promised.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
