Scripture
“Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.” (Jude 1:3, NKJV)
Devotional
Jude intended to write about something else.
He wanted to celebrate with believers their “common salvation.” But circumstances within the church were so serious that he changed direction. False teachers had crept in unnoticed, distorting the grace of God and denying the authority of Jesus Christ.
So Jude issued an urgent charge: “Contend earnestly for the faith.”
There are times when love requires us to stand.
The word contend carries the idea of earnest struggle. Jude is not calling Christians to become argumentative, harsh, or combative. He is calling them to recognize that truth is precious enough to protect.
And notice what they are to contend for: “the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.”
The faith does not belong to us to reinvent.
We do not adjust biblical truth to make it more acceptable to the culture. We do not remove difficult teachings because they make us uncomfortable. We do not add new revelation that contradicts what God has already given.
We receive the truth.
We treasure it.
We live it.
And when necessary, we defend it.
This requires discernment because Jude says the danger had “crept in unnoticed.” Deception rarely announces itself plainly. False teaching often carries enough truth to sound convincing while quietly altering something essential.
That is why believers must know the Word of God for themselves.
We cannot recognize what is counterfeit if we are unfamiliar with what is true.
But contending for the faith is about more than identifying error. Our lives must also demonstrate the truth we defend. There is little value in winning an argument about biblical truth while behaving in a way that contradicts the Christ revealed in it.
Truth and love belong together.
We contend without becoming contentious.
We stand without becoming proud.
We speak truth without abandoning grace.
The faith has been entrusted to us, not to reshape according to our preferences, but to faithfully carry forward.
Some truths are worth standing for.
The gospel is one of them.
Takeaway & Reflection
Believers are called to faithfully guard the truth God has entrusted to His people.
- Biblical truth is received, not reinvented.
- Knowing Scripture helps us recognize subtle deception.
- We should contend for truth with courage, humility, and love.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the truth You have entrusted to Your people. Give me discernment to recognize error, courage to stand firmly for Your Word, and humility to contend without becoming contentious. Help me know Your truth deeply, live it faithfully, and speak it with love. Keep me steadfast in the faith once for all delivered to the saints.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
