Scripture
“For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called… But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise… that no flesh should glory in His presence.” (1 Corinthians 1:26–29, NKJV)
Devotional
Paul invites the Corinthians to remember who they were when God called them, not the impressive, influential, or elite, but ordinary men and women touched by extraordinary grace. God did not choose them because of their strength, their intellect, or their social standing. He chose them to display His wisdom, not theirs; His power, not theirs.
- God delights to overturn human expectations.
- The world chooses the strong; God chooses the humble.
- The world esteems the brilliant; God uses the willing.
- The world admires the noble; God crowns the meek.
Why? “That no flesh should glory in His presence.”
God refuses to let salvation become a monument to human achievement. The gospel is designed to humble the proud and lift the lowly so that all boasting returns to Christ alone.
Verse 30 reminds us that Christ Himself has become our righteousness, our sanctification, and our redemption. Everything we need, acceptance, transformation, freedom, is found in Him. We do not bring our worth to God; we receive our worth from God.
This passage frees us from striving:
- We don’t have to be impressive; we have to be His.
- We don’t have to qualify ourselves; He qualifies us.
- Our confidence isn’t in who we are, but in who He is.
And so, “He who glories, let him glory in the Lord.”
Takeaway & Reflection
God calls the humble so that Christ receives all the glory.
- Our worth is rooted in God’s choosing, not our ability.
- Christ Himself is our righteousness and redemption.
- True confidence comes from boasting only in the Lord.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for choosing me by grace, not by merit. Help me to rest in who You are rather than striving to prove myself. Let my life be a testimony of Your wisdom, Your strength, and Your redemption. Teach me to boast only in Christ.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
