Carnality Hinders Growth

Scripture

“And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men?” (1 Corinthians 3:1–4, NKJV)

Devotional

Paul continues his concern for the Corinthians by identifying what has stunted their growth—carnality. Though they had received the Spirit, they were not walking in His power. Instead, their lives were marked by jealousy, division, and pride—the visible evidence of spiritual immaturity. Their attitudes and actions were worldly, not Christlike.

Carnality always hinders spiritual progress. It dulls discernment, weakens faith, and keeps believers from growing deeper in their walk with God. Just as physical growth requires nourishment and exercise, spiritual growth requires submission and obedience. The Corinthians had heard the Word, but they had not yet allowed it to shape their hearts.

Paul’s metaphor of “milk and solid food” is both gentle and convicting. Milk is essential for new believers, but remaining there too long limits maturity. God desires that His people grow strong in truth—able to discern, to forgive, to serve, and to endure. Growth in grace is not automatic; it comes as we yield daily to the Spirit’s transforming work.

When we choose humility over pride, forgiveness over strife, and unity over division, we move from carnality to maturity. Spiritual growth is not about knowledge alone, but about living in submission to Christ—where love replaces envy and peace replaces contention.

Takeaway & Reflection

Spiritual growth is impossible without surrender to the Spirit.

  • Carnality thrives on pride and self-will.
  • Maturity begins when we yield fully to God’s Word and Spirit.
  • Growth flourishes where humility and love take root.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Search my heart and reveal any trace of carnality that hinders my growth. Teach me to walk in humility, love, and obedience. Let Your Spirit renew my mind and transform my desires, that I might grow into the likeness of Christ and bring glory to Your name.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
