Called by God, Anchored in Grace

Scripture

“Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, to the church of God which is at Corinth… Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 1:1–3, NKJV)

Devotional

Paul begins his letter not with correction, but with identity, his own and theirs. He is “called to be an apostle… through the will of God.” His authority does not come from talent, training, or ambition, but from God’s sovereign choosing. Before Paul writes a single word of instruction, he lays the foundation: these are not his ideas, they are the Lord’s.

He then reminds the Corinthians of who they are: the church of God, people set apart by Christ and held in His grace. Before addressing their divisions, immorality, confusion, and immaturity, Paul speaks blessing: “Grace to you and peace.” These two words, grace and peace, frame the entire Christian life. Grace saves us; peace sustains us.

In these opening verses, we are taught something essential: Every calling, every correction, every step of obedience rests on the will of God and flows from the grace of God.

  • Paul’s authority begins with God’s will.
  • The church’s identity begins with God’s choosing.
  • And our endurance begins with God’s grace and peace.

Whatever God calls you to today, whether a conversation, a ministry, a burden, or a step of faith, you can step forward with confidence, knowing that the One who calls you also equips you, empowers you, and walks with you.

Takeaway & Reflection

God’s calling rests on His will, not our worthiness.

  • Paul’s authority came from God’s choosing.
  • Our identity is found in being God’s people, set apart by Christ.
  • Grace and peace are the atmosphere of every faithful step.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for calling me according to Your will. Help me walk in the identity You have given me, chosen, set apart, and sustained by grace. Let every step I take flow from Your peace, not my strength. Anchor my heart in who You are and who I am in You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
