Ask God for Wisdom

Scripture

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5, NKJV)

Devotional

After speaking about trials, James immediately turns to wisdom.

That is not accidental.

When difficulties come, our greatest need is often not relief, but wisdom. We want answers, solutions, and clarity. We want to know what God is doing and how we should respond. James points us to the One who has exactly what we need: “Let him ask of God.”

What a simple invitation.

God does not tell us to figure everything out on our own. He does not expect us to navigate trials through human reasoning alone. Instead, He invites us to come to Him and ask.

And notice His character:

  • He gives liberally.
  • He gives without reproach.

God is not reluctant to provide wisdom. He does not scold His children for asking. He does not say, “You should already know this.” He welcomes our dependence upon Him.

The challenge James addresses is not whether God will give wisdom, but whether we will ask in faith. Faith believes that God hears, cares, and responds. It rests confidently in His goodness even before the answer arrives.

Wisdom is more than information. It is the ability to see life from God’s perspective and respond according to His will. In trials, wisdom helps us recognize God’s purposes. In decisions, wisdom helps us walk the right path. In relationships, wisdom helps us reflect Christ.

The believer who seeks God regularly for wisdom discovers something wonderful: God delights in guiding His children.

You may not have all the answers today.

But you know the One who does.

Takeaway & Reflection

God generously gives wisdom to those who ask in faith.

  • Wisdom begins by seeking God.
  • God welcomes dependent hearts.
  • Faith trusts God’s guidance even before it is fully understood.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You that I can come to You for wisdom. Help me seek Your perspective rather than relying on my own understanding. Strengthen my faith to trust Your guidance, and give me wisdom for every trial, decision, and opportunity before me.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
