Scripture
“But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.” (1 Corinthians 12:11, NKJV)
Devotional
After listing the manifestations of the Spirit – wisdom, knowledge, faith, healings, miracles, prophecy, discernment, tongues – Paul closes the discussion with a decisive reminder: “As He wills.”
Spiritual gifts are not earned by effort. They are not achieved through maturity. They are not requested into existence by preference. They are not badges of superiority. They are sovereignly distributed by the Holy Spirit according to His wisdom and purpose.
The Corinthians struggled because they compared gifts. Some elevated the dramatic. Others felt inferior. Paul brings them back to the foundation: there is one Spirit, one source, one will.
The Spirit gives what the body needs, not what the individual desires. This truth protects us from pride and from insecurity.
- If a gift is visible, it is grace.
- If a gift is quiet, it is grace.
- If a gift is different from another’s, it is still grace.
The Spirit knows exactly what to place where.
- We are not called to choose our gift.
- We are called to steward what we have received.
When we rest in “as He wills,” competition fades. Comparison weakens. Gratitude grows. The focus shifts from “Why not me?” to “How may I serve?”
The sovereignty of the Spirit does not diminish responsibility, it clarifies it. If He has entrusted something to you, it is intentional. If He has not, that too is intentional.
God’s will is wiser than our preference.
Takeaway & Reflection
The Spirit distributes gifts according to His sovereign will.
- Gifts are grace, not achievement.
- Comparison undermines unity.
- Faithfulness matters more than visibility.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the wisdom of Your Spirit. Guard my heart from comparison or pride. Help me receive what You have given with gratitude and steward it faithfully for the good of others. Teach me to trust Your will above my preference.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
