Scripture
“For a great and effective door has opened to me, and there are many adversaries.” (1 Corinthians 16:9, NKJV)
Devotional
Paul saw opportunity and opposition existing side by side.
A “great and effective door” had opened for ministry, people were listening, the gospel was advancing, and God was clearly at work. Yet Paul immediately adds: “and there are many adversaries.”
We often assume that if God is opening a door, the path should become easy. But Scripture frequently shows the opposite. Some of the clearest opportunities from God come with the fiercest resistance.
Opposition is not always evidence that we are outside God’s will. Sometimes it is evidence that the work matters.
Paul did not allow adversity to convince him to abandon the assignment. He understood that spiritual fruit often grows in contested ground. The enemy resists what glorifies Christ and strengthens His people.
This passage calls believers to discern carefully. Closed doors and difficult doors are not always the same thing. Some doors remain open even while opposition increases. In those moments, wisdom and perseverance are needed.
Paul stayed because the opportunity was worth the struggle.
How often do we retreat the moment resistance appears? We may assume hardship means we should quit, step back, or choose something easier. But God sometimes calls us to remain faithful in difficult places because He is accomplishing something eternal there.
Open doors may require courage to walk through.
When God provides opportunity:
- serve faithfully
- endure opposition
- trust His purpose
The presence of adversaries does not cancel the presence of God.
Takeaway & Reflection
God’s opportunities often require perseverance through opposition.
- Open doors and adversity can exist together.
- Resistance does not always mean retreat.
- Faithfulness continues even when the work is difficult.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Give me discernment to recognize the doors You open and courage to walk through them faithfully. Help me not to grow discouraged by opposition, but to trust that You are at work even in difficult places. Strengthen me to persevere in what You have called me to do.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
