Mark 4:35-41 Jesus Calms the Storm

Read

“On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”

Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

Mark 4:35-41 NKJV

Summary

Mark 4:35-41 recounts the poignant moment when Jesus and His disciples faced a fierce storm while crossing the Sea of Galilee. As the winds howled and waves crashed into the boat, Jesus, who was peacefully asleep, awakens to rebuke the storm and calms the raging sea. This passage serves as a powerful illustration of Jesus’ authority over the forces of nature and, more profoundly, as a metaphor for navigating the storms of life with faith.

Life Application

Recognizing the Reality of Storms (Mark 4:35): Acknowledge that storms are an inevitable part of life. Trials and challenges will come, but they are opportunities for growth and dependence on God.

Seeking Jesus in the Storm (Mark 4:36-38): When faced with difficulties, turn to Jesus. Approach Him with faith and an open heart, recognizing His presence even in the midst of chaos.

Trusting in Jesus’ Authority (Mark 4:39): Develop unwavering trust in Jesus’ authority over all circumstances. Know that His power extends beyond the natural realm and that He can speak peace into any turbulent situation.

Rebuking Fear (Mark 4:40): Confront fear with faith. Jesus’ question, “Why are you so fearful?” challenges us to examine our fears and trust that He is in control, leading us to a place of peace.

Growing in Faith (Mark 4:41): Embrace each storm as an opportunity for spiritual growth. Just as the disciples marveled at Jesus’ power, let challenges deepen your faith and draw you closer to Him.

Conclusion

As we journey through life, we are bound to encounter storms—unexpected challenges, uncertainties, and trials. Yet, Mark 4:35-41 reassures us that in the midst of life’s tempests, Jesus is present, ready to calm our fears and bring peace to our souls. Let this passage be a constant reminder that, with faith, we can navigate the storms of life, trusting in the authority of the One who holds the wind and waves in His hands.

  1. In Mark 4:39 (KJV):
“And he arose, and rebuked (express sharp disapproval or criticism of (someone) because of their behavior or actions:) the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.”
    • The wind was the invisible force driving the storm and creating the waves.
    • Jesus addressed the root cause first, not just the visible effect.
    • Principle: Spiritual authority deals with the unseen before the seen.

    1. Frank, thank you for taking the time to share this. I appreciate your observation in Mark 4:39—Jesus “rebuked the wind” and then spoke, “Peace, be still,” with real authority over the whole storm. And I love how the passage also moves from the outward storm to the inward one when Jesus asks about fear and faith (Mark 4:40).

When you say “deals with the unseen before the seen,” are you thinking mainly of the heart-level fear/faith piece, or something else? Either way, thank you for adding to the discussion.
