Revelation – Week 42

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for ending Your Word with both a promise and an invitation. As we read of blessing, warning, and grace, stir our hearts to obedience, repentance, and readiness. May we respond to the invitation to come, cling to the hope of Jesus’ return, and live in the power of Your grace each day. Keep us faithful until that day when we see Christ face to face.

In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Discussion

The Bible closes with a blessing, a warning, and a final invitation. Those who wash their robes are welcomed into the eternal city, but those who persist in rebellion remain outside. Jesus Himself speaks as the Root and Offspring of David and the Bright and Morning Star, affirming His authority and hope. The Spirit and the Bride together issue a universal call: “Come!”—to any who thirst, any who desire, all who will take freely of the water of life.

These verses also carry a sobering warning: do not tamper with God’s Word. Nothing may be added or taken away. The testimony is sealed with the final promise of Jesus: “Surely I am coming quickly.” John’s reply becomes the longing cry of all believers—“Even so, come, Lord Jesus!” The last words of Scripture close not with fear, but with grace.

KEY POINTS:

  • The Blessing of the Redeemed (22:14)
    • Those who wash their robes (or “do His commandments,” depending on translation) are welcomed into the city and given access to the tree of life.
    • Takeaway: Obedience and cleansing are not the means of salvation but the evidence of it.
  • The Warning of Exclusion (22:15)
    • Outside are the impure—those who love sin and lies. This is not a literal picture of people outside heaven’s walls, but a symbolic declaration of final separation.
    • Takeaway: Sin and rebellion will not enter God’s city. Holiness is required, and only Christ can provide it.
  • Jesus’ Word of Verification (22:16)
    • Jesus affirms His authority as both Root and Offspring of David and as the Bright and Morning Star.
    • Takeaway: He is the fulfillment of prophecy and the dawning hope of God’s people.
  • The Final Invitation (22:17)
    • The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come!” This invitation is open to all who hear, thirst, or desire.
    • Takeaway: Salvation is free, full, and available now. The only barrier is unbelief.
  • The Warning Against Tampering (22:18–19)
    • A severe caution is given: those who add to or take away from this book will face God’s judgment.
    • Takeaway: God’s Word is complete, sufficient, and authoritative—we are to receive it, not revise it.
  • The Final Promise and Prayer (22:20–21)
    • Jesus says, “Surely I am coming quickly.” John answers, “Even so, come, Lord Jesus!”
    • The Bible ends with grace: “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.”
    • Takeaway: Our hope is certain, our longing is real, and our future rests in God’s grace.

Life Application

These questions and answers encourage us to reflect on the practical application of the scripture in our own lives.

Question 1: What does it mean to have your robes “washed” in Christ—and how does this assurance shape your confidence about eternity?

Cleansing is not about self-effort but about receiving Christ’s finished work. The robe is washed in His blood, not our striving.

Application: Reflect on your salvation testimony this week. Thank Jesus for cleansing you and giving you access to eternal life.

The Spirit and the Bride together call the thirsty to take the water of life freely. The invitation is wide open, but not forever.

Application: Pray for one person who needs to hear this invitation. Look for a chance to extend it with love and clarity this week.

This prayer anchors us in hope and reminds us that life’s ultimate answer is Christ’s return.

Application: Make this prayer part of your week. Whisper it in moments of weariness, longing, or worship: “Come, Lord Jesus.”

Conclusion

Revelation ends with grace, glory, and urgency. Blessing is promised to the redeemed, warning is given to the rebellious, and invitation is extended to all who thirst. Jesus assures us He is coming quickly. Until then, our calling is to come, to worship, to obey, and to long for His return. The final word is grace—reminding us that everything we need has been secured in Christ.

LIFE APPLICATION TAKEAWAYS:

  • Salvation is a free gift, but obedience and cleansing are evidence of true faith.
  • Sin cannot enter God’s holy city—only those washed in Christ are welcomed.
  • Jesus fulfills prophecy and shines as the Morning Star—our eternal hope.
  • God’s Word is complete and untouchable—we are to hear it, keep it, and trust it.
  • The Christian’s cry remains: “Even so, come, Lord Jesus!”—and grace is with us until He does.
