Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Jesus—stronger than a legion of demons, attentive to the touch of the outcast, and sovereign over life and death. You meet us in our torment, in our desperation, and in our grief. Teach us to trust Your timing, believe Your Word, and proclaim what You’ve done.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Discussion
A storm may have brought the boat to shore, but it’s a storm-tossed man who meets Jesus on the other side. He’s possessed, tormented, feared by his community—and yet he runs to worship. Jesus delivers him fully, then sends him out as a missionary. Back on the Jewish side of the lake, two urgent interruptions collide: a synagogue leader pleads for his dying daughter, and a bleeding woman presses through the crowd. Both are desperate, both are defiled, and both are restored by Jesus’ power. He pauses to call faith out of hiding, then proceeds to raise the dead. Mark 5 is a chapter of deliverance, healing, and resurrection—and each moment reveals the unstoppable authority and tender compassion of Christ.
KEY POINTS:
- The Demoniac Delivered (Mark 5:1–20)
- The man lives among the tombs—naked, chained, self-harming, and possessed by many demons. Even so, he runs to Jesus. A legion of demons is cast out into pigs, who rush into the sea. The townspeople plead with Jesus to leave; the healed man is commissioned to stay and testify.
- Takeaway: No one is too far gone for Jesus to restore—and our testimony may be most powerful where our pain once lived.
- The Desperate Father (Mark 5:21–24)
- Jairus, a respected synagogue leader, falls at Jesus’ feet and pleads for his dying daughter. His request is bold, public, and urgent—and Jesus goes with him.
- Takeaway: Faith moves us to the feet of Jesus—and He responds to our cry, even when the road ahead includes delay.
- The Hidden Healer (Mark 5:25–34)
- A woman with a 12-year hemorrhage presses through the crowd, believing if she can just touch His garment, she’ll be healed. She is—and Jesus pauses to draw her out, commend her faith, and bless her in peace.
- Takeaway: Even flawed, quiet faith in Jesus holds power—because it’s not the strength of our grip but the sufficiency of the One we touch.
- The Girl Restored (Mark 5:35–43)
- As news arrives that Jairus’ daughter has died, Jesus tells him, “Do not be afraid; only believe.” He takes only Peter, James, and John inside, puts out the mourners, and raises the girl with a simple command: “Little girl, arise.”
- Takeaway: Jesus speaks life into death, hope into despair, and calls us to believe—especially when fear tempts us to quit.
Life Application
These questions and answers encourage us to reflect on the practical application of the scripture in our own lives.
Question 1: Where are you tempted to believe someone is too far gone?
The demon-possessed man lived naked among tombs, bound in chains and feared by all—yet he ran to Jesus and was completely restored.
Application: Think of someone (even yourself) who seems beyond hope. This week, pray specifically for their deliverance—and trust that Jesus still sets captives free.
Question 2: What secret struggle are you bringing quietly to Jesus?
The bleeding woman didn’t make a public plea—she just reached out in faith and touched His garment. Jesus called her out, not to shame her, but to affirm her faith and give her peace.
Application: Name one hidden area of need—physical, emotional, or spiritual—and bring it honestly to Jesus in prayer. Don’t settle for a private touch when He invites you to wholeness.
Question 3: How will you respond when Jesus delays?
Jairus watched Jesus pause for someone else while his daughter was dying—then heard she was already gone. But Jesus told him, “Do not be afraid; only believe.”
Application: Identify one area where God seems slow or silent. Write out Jesus’ words—“Only believe”—and speak them over your fear each day this week.
Conclusion
Mark 5 showcases Jesus’ complete authority over evil, sickness, shame, and death. From the tombs to the fringes of the crowd to the inner room of a grieving home, He meets people in crisis with power and compassion. This chapter reminds us: Jesus goes where others won’t, touches what others won’t, and restores what no one else can. His timing may stretch our faith—but His mercy never fails.
LIFE APPLICATION TAKEAWAYS:
- No one is beyond the reach of Jesus—His deliverance restores identity and purpose.
- Desperation is not weakness when it brings us to the feet of Christ.
- Jesus sees hidden faith and blesses it with peace and healing.
- Delays are not denials—Jesus works even when others say it’s too late.
- Resurrection begins with His voice—so listen, believe, and rise.
