Jude – Week 1

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You that our security does not ultimately depend upon our own strength, but upon Yours. In a world filled with deception, temptation, and spiritual danger, help us remain close to You and faithfully walk in Your truth.

Teach us to depend upon Your power rather than trusting ourselves. Strengthen us to obey Your Word, remain in Your love, and follow where You lead, knowing that You are faithfully at work within us.

Thank You for the wonderful hope that one day You will bring us safely into Your presence. Keep our eyes fixed upon Jesus until that day.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Discussion

Jude has spent much of his letter warning believers about false teachers, spiritual deception, immorality, and the danger of wandering from the truth. After such serious warnings, it might be easy to wonder: How can anyone remain faithful?

Jude turns our attention away from the dangers surrounding us and toward the God who keeps us.

Earlier, Jude called believers to remain watchful, build themselves up in faith, pray in the Holy Spirit, and keep themselves in the love of God. Yet here he reminds us that beneath all our perseverance is God’s sustaining power. We are responsible to remain close to Him and faithfully obey, but we are never asked to preserve ourselves through our own strength.

There is a beautiful partnership in the Christian life: we actively follow, obey, resist temptation, and remain rooted in God’s truth while trusting that God Himself is working within us. Our confidence is not that we will never encounter danger or lose our footing, but that the One holding us is stronger than anything seeking to pull us away.

And God’s work does not end with keeping us through this life. Jude looks ahead to our final destination. The same God who keeps us today will one day bring us into His glorious presence, not reluctantly or barely rescued, but accepted in Christ and welcomed with exceeding joy.

KEY POINTS:

  • Our Confidence Is in God’s Ability
    • After warning believers about serious spiritual dangers, Jude directs their attention to what God is able to do.
    • Takeaway: Our hope rests not in our ability to hold everything together, but in the power and faithfulness of God.
  • God Is Able to Keep Us from Stumbling
    • The Christian life requires vigilance and obedience, but our perseverance ultimately depends upon God’s sustaining grace.
    • Takeaway: Stay close to the Lord, trusting Him to steady your steps when temptation, confusion, or weakness threatens your footing.
  • God’s Keeping Does Not Make Us Passive
    • Jude has already instructed believers to build themselves up in faith and keep themselves in God’s love. God’s work in us does not eliminate our responsibility; it enables it.
    • Takeaway: Dependence upon God should produce faithful obedience, not spiritual complacency.
  • Our Standing Before God Is Found in Christ
    • Jude points beyond today’s struggles to the day when believers will stand before God’s glory. We will not arrive there because we managed to make ourselves faultless, but because Christ has made us acceptable before God.
    • Takeaway: Our assurance rests in what Jesus has accomplished for us, not in our own perfection.
  • Our Destination Is Joy
    • Jude’s warnings are serious, but they do not end in fear. For those who belong to Christ, the destination is the glorious presence of God with exceeding joy.
    • Takeaway: We can face today’s spiritual battles with hope because we know where God is ultimately bringing us.

OVERALL TAKEAWAY: Jude 1:24 reminds us that while believers must remain alert, faithful, and obedient, we do not walk the Christian life alone. God Himself is at work keeping, strengthening, and sustaining His people.

Our confidence is not that we are strong enough never to stumble, but that He is able to keep us. The God who holds us today is also preparing us for eternity, when we will stand before His glory because of Christ, not in fear, but with exceeding joy.

Life Application

These questions and answers encourage us to reflect on the practical application of the scripture in our own lives.

Question 1: Am I depending upon God’s strength or my own?

It is easy to approach spiritual growth as though everything depends upon our ability to remain strong. Jude reminds us that God is the One who ultimately keeps His people.

Application: Identify an area where you have been striving in your own strength. Bring it honestly before the Lord and ask Him to help you walk in dependence upon Him.

God’s keeping power does not remove our responsibility to remain watchful, pray, obey His Word, and stay close to Him.

Application: Consider whether there is one spiritual discipline or act of obedience you have neglected. Take a practical step this week to faithfully respond to what God has already shown you.

Jude does not leave believers staring at the dangers around them. He lifts their eyes toward the day when God will bring them safely into His glorious presence.

Application: When discouragement or spiritual opposition comes, remind yourself of your destination. Let the certainty of God’s promises strengthen you to remain faithful today.

Conclusion

Jude’s warnings remind us that the Christian life requires discernment, perseverance, and faithfulness. Yet Jude does not leave us carrying that responsibility alone. He directs our eyes to the One whose power is greater than every danger we face.

God calls us to walk faithfully with Him, and He supplies what we cannot provide for ourselves. He steadies our steps, works within us, and will faithfully complete what He has begun.

Our hope is not ultimately; I am able to keep myself.

Our hope is far better; He is able to keep me.

LIFE APPLICATION TAKEAWAYS:

  • Trust God’s strength more than your own.
  • Stay close to the Lord when spiritual dangers surround you.
  • Faithfully participate in the work God is doing within you.
  • Remember that God’s grace produces perseverance, not passivity.
  • Rest in Christ rather than your own spiritual performance.
  • Let your eternal destination give you courage for today’s struggles.
  • Remember: the God who keeps you now will bring you safely into His presence.
