Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the truths in Galatians 3:1-18, reminding us that our salvation is grounded in faith, not in our works. You have freed us from the law’s burden, showing that only through trusting in Jesus are we made righteous.

Help us cling to the Gospel of grace. Guard us from deception that leads us to rely on our own efforts. Keep our eyes on Jesus, crucified for our sins, and remind us that we received Your Spirit and grow through faith, not by our own strength.

Thank You for Abraham’s example of faith. Strengthen us to rely on the Holy Spirit, living out the righteousness and freedom You’ve given us through faith.

We are grateful that Jesus redeemed us from the law’s curse, bearing our sins so we could receive the blessing of Abraham and Your Spirit. Let us live confidently, resting in Your love and mercy, free from condemnation and fear.

Deepen our understanding of Your covenant and promises, knowing they are fulfilled in Christ and unchanging. Teach us to live by faith, walking in the Spirit, and boldly share this Gospel of grace with others.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Discussion

In Galatians 3:1-18, Paul passionately urges the Galatians to hold onto the Gospel they initially received by faith. He explains that their relationship with God was established through faith, not by the works of the law. Paul uses the example of Abraham, who was counted righteous by faith, as proof that God’s promises come through faith alone. This passage emphasizes that Christ took on the curse of the law for us, allowing us to walk in the blessing of Abraham through faith.

KEY POINTS:

  • The Danger of Departing from Faith (Galatians 3:1-5): Paul strongly rebukes the Galatians for abandoning the Gospel of grace, suggesting that they were “bewitched” into thinking they could be made perfect by their own efforts. He reminds them that they received the Holy Spirit through faith and challenges them to continue relying on the Spirit, not the works of the law.
  • Abraham’s Faith and the Promise (Galatians 3:6-9): Using Abraham as an example, Paul explains that Abraham was counted righteous by faith, not by works, and emphasizes that the true children of Abraham are those who have faith. The blessing given to Abraham extends to all who believe, Jew and Gentile alike.
  • Redemption from the Curse of the Law (Galatians 3:10-13): Paul points out that those who rely on the law are under a curse since no one can keep it perfectly. Jesus redeemed us from this curse by taking it upon Himself on the cross, setting us free to receive God’s blessing through faith.
  • The Law and the Promise (Galatians 3:14-18): Paul explains that the promise given to Abraham was based on faith, not on the law. The law, which came 430 years after the promise, does not override it. The inheritance we receive from God is through His promise to Abraham and is fulfilled in Christ.

Life Application

These questions and answers encourage us to reflect on the practical application of the scripture in our own lives.

Question 1: Living by Faith, Not Works: How can you, like the Galatians, ensure that you’re walking by faith and not relying on your own efforts?

Focus on the Gospel by reflecting on the truth that our relationship with God is rooted in faith in Jesus, not in our ability to keep the law. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any areas where you may be striving to earn God’s favor.

Seek the Spirit’s guidance daily in prayer, surrendering each area of life to God’s direction. Remember that growth comes not from our efforts but from the Spirit’s transformative work within us.

Like Abraham, hold onto God’s promises even when circumstances seem challenging. Remind yourself that God’s promises are fulfilled by His faithfulness, not our works, and ask Him to strengthen your faith in every season.

Conclusion

Galatians 3:1-18 calls us to live by faith rather than by works, pointing to Abraham as an example of righteousness by faith. Paul reminds the Galatians, and us, that the promise God made to Abraham was fulfilled in Christ, freeing us from the curse of the law and granting us the blessing of faith. We are encouraged to live as people of faith, relying on the Spirit’s guidance and standing on God’s promises.

LIFE APPLICATION TAKEAWAYS:

  • Keep Christ Central: Keep your focus on the truth of Jesus’ sacrifice to avoid deception.
  • Live by Faith: Embrace the truth that our relationship with God is based on faith, not on works.
  • Rely on the Spirit: Depend on the Holy Spirit for growth, rather than on personal efforts or accomplishments.
  • Trust God’s Promises: Follow Abraham’s example by trusting God’s promises, even when challenges arise.
