Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the opportunity to begin our study of the book of Galatians. As we embark on this journey, we ask for Your guidance and understanding. We know that through Paul’s letter, You are reminding us of the importance of holding fast to the true Gospel and not being swayed by false teachings. Lord, help us to grasp the gravity of turning away from the truth, as Paul expresses his astonishment at how quickly the Galatians were deserting the one who called them by grace.
Teach us to discern truth from error, to recognize when we are being led astray, and to stand firm in the message of Christ. As we reflect on Galatians 1:6-10, may we take to heart Paul’s warning that if anyone preaches a gospel other than the one we have received, let them be under God’s curse.
Father, we pray for the courage to live out our faith boldly, not seeking to please people, but rather to serve Christ alone. Help us to understand that true freedom comes from embracing the Gospel in its fullness, and that our identity in Christ is grounded in the truth of Your Word. As we begin this study, may we be transformed by the truths we uncover, and may we apply them to our lives with diligence and faithfulness.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Discussion
This week marks the beginning of our study in the book of Galatians. Paul writes this letter with a deep sense of urgency, addressing the churches in Galatia who were quickly turning away from the Gospel of grace that he had preached to them. Galatians 1:6-10 sets the tone for the entire letter, emphasizing the seriousness of adhering to the true Gospel and the dangers of falling into false teachings. Paul’s words challenge us to examine our own faith and to ensure that we are grounded in the truth of Christ.
- Astonishment at Desertion (Galatians 1:6): Paul expresses his shock that the Galatians are so quickly deserting the true Gospel for a different one. This verse serves as a reminder to us to be vigilant and discerning in our faith, ensuring that we are not easily swayed by teachings that deviate from the truth.
- The Danger of False Gospels (Galatians 1:7-9): Paul warns that there are those who are trying to pervert the Gospel of Christ. He strongly condemns any message that strays from the Gospel, stating that even if an angel from heaven should preach a different gospel, they should be under God’s curse. This passage underscores the importance of knowing and holding fast to the true Gospel, which is the foundation of our faith.
- Seeking to Please God, Not People (Galatians 1:10): Paul concludes this section by making it clear that his goal is not to win the approval of people, but of God. He reminds us that as servants of Christ, we must prioritize pleasing God over pleasing others, even when it may be difficult or unpopular.
Life Application
These questions and answers encourage us to reflect on the practical application of the scripture in our own lives.
Question 1: Guarding Against False Teachings: Reflect on how you can stay grounded in the true Gospel. What steps can you take to ensure you are not swayed by teachings that deviate from the truth of Christ?
To stay grounded in the true Gospel, regularly immerse yourself in the study of Scripture, prayer, and fellowship with other believers who are committed to biblical truth. Be discerning by comparing any teaching you hear with the Word of God, and seek counsel from trusted, mature Christians when in doubt. Avoid sources that dilute or distort the message of the Gospel, and focus on developing a deeper relationship with Christ through His Word.
Question 2: Pleasing God Over People: Consider how often you seek the approval of others versus the approval of God. What changes can you make in your life to align more closely with Paul’s example of prioritizing God’s will over the opinions of others?
Start by examining your motivations in different areas of life—work, relationships, and ministry. Ask yourself whether your actions are driven by a desire to please God or to gain the approval of others. Make a conscious effort to align your decisions with God’s Word, even when it may lead to opposition or criticism. Practice speaking and acting in ways that reflect your commitment to Christ, and remind yourself daily that your ultimate accountability is to God, not people.
Question 3: Understanding the True Gospel: Take time this week to meditate on the core message of the Gospel. How can a deeper understanding of the Gospel strengthen your faith and guide your actions?
By deeply understanding the Gospel—that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again to give us eternal life—you strengthen your faith by rooting it in the foundational truth of Christianity. This understanding helps you to live with confidence in God’s grace, resist temptations to earn God’s favor through works, and share the Gospel with others boldly and accurately. It guides your actions by reminding you of your identity in Christ and the purpose of living for His glory.
Conclusion
As we begin our study of Galatians, let’s be mindful of the importance of holding fast to the true Gospel. Paul’s message to the Galatians serves as a powerful reminder to us that the Gospel is not to be altered or compromised. Our faith must be rooted in the truth of Christ, and our lives should reflect a commitment to pleasing God above all else.
